THM-Carbones

THM-Carbones is the name given to a group of products manufactured by THM GmbH, a company with a history in design and manufacture of high-end carbon fiber components within the bicycle industry. There main focus has always been to produce components, which are both extremely light and extremely durable.

The correct application of carbon fiber requires enormous know-how. Experience and high standards are the basis of exceptional products. THM has been developing and building carbon fiber components for companies like Storck Bicycles for many years. The "Stiletto" fork, the "Organic" MTB frame and the "Powerarm" cranks have an equally great reputation among racers and bicycle magazines.

THM set new standards producing the first carbon fiber fork using continuous fibers from the steerer to the dropouts. Winner in magazine shootouts, award-winning design ("Roter Punkt" for highest design quality award from the Forum Industrial Design in Hanover) - THM products always come out on top! THM create the initial design, development, testing and production. As everything is done in-house they have short development cycles, enabling them to quickly incorporate new test results into their products, thereby improving them continuously.

Owner Thomas Mertin has been researching ideas for his own complete product line for many years, and wanted to use his experience in this field to create his own brand. THM-Carbones are the result - carbon fiber components in perfection. The name signifies the perfection of natural evolution, as bones are both stiff and lightweight.

THM Carbon fibre forks:

Scapula / Scapula SP / Scapula SP Tuned
Scapula by THM-Carbones represents the pinnacle in carbon fiber fork evolution. In terms of weight, brake stiffness, and steering precision the "Scapula" and "Scapula SP", set new standards for professional racers and performance-oriented cyclists alike.

Due to their extremely low weight (as low as 235 g / 0.52 lbs) and exceptional stiffness, these forks are the answer to the enormous demands of modern road racing. The "Scapula" forks allow you to greatly reduce the weight of your bicycle, and improve your performance considerably.

In tight crits or screaming down hills - the "Scapula's" unparalleled cornering precision and stiffness under braking loads are confidence inspiring. Compared with the "Stiletto", designed and built for Storck Bicycles, THM-Carbones have changed the fork's geometry slightly, further improving stiffness and reducing weight. The lightest version of the "Scapula SP" weighs only 235 g (0.52 lbs).

Scapula features:

Continuous fibers: The main carbon fibers run uninterrupted all the way from the top of the steerer down to the dropouts, allowing maximum stiffness and durability at a very low weight. Common carbon fiber forks are made from several parts glued together (e.g. steerer, fork legs, crown, dropouts). In addition, all "Scapula" forks use a special kind of carbon fiber. A material which comes at a higher price, but offers superior strength and the resulting doubled stiffness compared to ordinary carbon fiber forks make it the obvious material for their forks.

Varying wall thickness: In all parts of the fork, wall thickness and direction of the carbon fibers are carefully chosen depending on the kinds of forces encountered in actual riding conditions. The interior cross-section of the steerer tube, for example is oval instead of round, as the greatest forces a fork is subjected to are from the front. Thus, the "Scapula" forks are both stiffer AND lighter than competitors' forks with ordinary round steerers.

Aluminum crown race: The lower headset race sits on an aluminum sleeve bonded to the carbon fiber fork crown. Compared to a carbon fiber headset seat, the aluminum sleeve provides a more exact alignment of the headset race and will keep its shape better even after multiple headset changes.

Carbon fiber dropouts: For weight reasons, the dropouts have a carbon fiber core. Aluminum inserts protect the dropout against compression by the axle and quick release. Together, the construction yields a sensationally light part which is fully capable of standing up to every day racing use.

No star-fangled nut in the steerer: There is no need for a crude clamping mechanism with the "Scapula". The upper section of the steerer tube has been fitted with large threads. Simply cut the fork to length and insert the supplied adapter. Headset adjustments are made using an ordinary M6 bolt.
Ordinary designs use a sharp-edged star-fangled nut, which is hammered into the steerer or a wedge-type expander. Both designs increase weight and diminish longevity. Not so with "Scapula"!

Protected brake hole: The bolt holding the front brake is fixed securely in an insert made from hardened aluminum. Thus, the bolt is not in direct contact with the carbon fiber. The fibers are securely protected, and forces are distributed evenly.


THM Carbon fibre cranks:

Clavicula / Clavicula compact
The "Clavicula" is a revolutionary new design of all-carbon crank. Designed in close cooperation with the Cologne-based design-specialist 'Formagic'.

New production methods never before used for cranks, achieve a giant leap in total stiffness, and the crank's stiffness-to-weight ratio sets new standards. In-house lab testing of various high-end cranks has proven the superior performance of the "Clavicula" crank system.

The cranks are designed for road bike applications with a 130bcd or 110bcd bolt circle diameter and for 68mm bottom bracket width ("Clavicula MTB" 94 x 58bcd / 73mm bottom bracket available soon!). 172.5 mm and 175 mm crank arms are also available. The sealed bearing bottom bracket attaches outside of the frame using the standard BSA threads (ITA also available for Italian frames). This design allows the use of larger diameter bearings and a wider bearing placement. In combination with the 30mm diameter axle these features make for a very stiff drivetrain.

Extensive testing, both static and dynamic have been completed successfully, to avoid even the slightest risk THM have set a rider weight limit of 85 kg (187 lbs.). These cranks have undergone extensive road tests with heavier riders and THM expect to be able to lift the limit after gathering enough information. Rider safety is top priority and the "Clavicula" is able to continually withstand highest loads - be it in hard sprints or during the toughest classics.
